What qualifies someone to use legal clinics or pro bono aid?

Usually the top qualifier in receiving legal help from a legal clinic or receiving pro bono aid is having a low-income household. For instance, a family of two earning less than $18,000 a year would qualify. Whether your case is civil or criminal can also be a major factor. Some clinics or pro bono work is done based on the type of case, or the location or health of the client.

What are the different types of law clinics?

Most law clinics are pro bono, meaning they serve a client free of charge. This is usually done in an effort to provide services to low-income clients. There are also clinics that focus on the public interest in serving low-income areas, students, or underrepresented causes. Since the students are not licensed attorneys, they cannot charge the same amount as an attorney.

Pro bono means to provide a service for free. Its a practice often used to help low-income clients.

Public interest law firms specialize in helping underrepresented people or causes. While the law firm is still a for-profit institution, the lawyers have a primary mission to help the people or the cause they choose to represent. If they deem a case worthy of being designated in the public interest, they will represent it, regardless of the financial benefits to the firm.

A legal clinic is a program that allows law school students to obtain credit and real-world experience by providing legal advice and services to actual clients. This is done under the supervision of licensed attorneys (who might also be law professors) and is designed to provide free legal advice to other students and/or those in low-income areas while providing experience to the law student. Law clinic cases are real and aim to educate the students in client interaction and process while gaining experience in live courtroom settings.
