An easy, step-by-step guide from a web developer

Ive been helping people build websites since 2004.

I wrote this FREE guide to help anyone from bloggers to business owners make their own website without having to learn code.

So far, this guide has helped people build over 250,000 new websites, and you can do it, too.

One of the best, easiest yet most comprehensive guides on setting up your new wordpress website.

Starting your very 1st website or helping someone who is?has some great walkthroughs for domain, hosting & CMS!

@RobMening Thank you, thank you thank you! Just usedto set up a site for my new venture. You made it easy (,)

Every month 370,000+ people use WebsiteSetup to build a website.

The guide is very detailed, yet very easy to follow even if youre not very technical.

Other guides can be outdated or misleading. I update my guides every month.

Your website will be set up the right way on the right platform for what you need.

I offer free help and consultation via email. Im more than happy to get you answers and clear up any questions you might have.

If you want to build a good, mobile friendly and functional website quickly, youll need to choose a platform (also known ascontent management system).

Well, back in 2004 when I got started with web development, most sites were built using HTML (code), CSS and even Flash. These took a lot of time to learn and were tricky to master.

Thats why most people still think creating a website from scratch is difficult or requires a lot of coding and design skills but thats no longer true. In 2018, content management systems (CMS) like WordPress have made creating a website accessible to everyone.

To put simply, a content management system (or website building platform) is a user-friendly platform for building websites and managing your own online content, instead of using a bunch of loose HTML pages.

In recent statistics made byW3Techs,WordPress is the most popularcontent management system (55%) followed by Joomla (20%) and Drupal (11%).

WordPress vs. HTML & CSS: Learning HTML from scratch can take 6+ months, let alone CSS and PHP. Having a basic knowledge of HTML can help you gauge things more quickly, but if you want to create a website within a day or two, learning HTML isnt a viable option.

WordPress vs. Website Builders: Website builders are expensive and often very limited. They are good for one-page websites, but not more.

WordPress vs. Joomla/Drupal:Drupalis a very powerful platform that is popular with web developers and experienced coders, but it comes with a very steep learning curve that makes it a bad choice for beginners.Joomlais similar to WordPress and works great for online stores, but youll need at least a little bit of technical coding to make it work the way you want.

If you want more details, Ive put together a prettycomprehensive comparison between WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.

If for some reason you dont want to build your site with WordPress, check out my Drupal, Joomla and HTML5 guides as well. They are all FREE to use.

Its the easiest platform Ive ever worked with, but its flexible enough to suit everyone from small business owners, and freelancers to creative artists and bloggers.

Choose a platform to build your website.which is free to use and easy to understand. In this guide, Ill be showing you how to create a site using WordPress, too.

At this point you dont need to install/download anything. Ill show you this in the next steps.

In order to get set up your WordPress (or any other type of websites), youre going to need two things:

The WordPress platform itself is free, but a domain name and hosting will cost you around $3 $5 a month. However it costs less than a coffee, so it wont break the bank.

Owning your own domain name looks far more professional than having your site on someone elses domain (like m), and its super affordable, too.

Plus, having your own hosting will also make sure your website loads quickly and wont go down for hours at a time (pretty important for everyone who visits your pages.)

Ive mostly used a web hosting and domain registrar.

Theyre really affordable, have good customer service, and theyre currently throwing in a domain name for free so its worth checking them out.

When you get a domain name, youll also get a personal email account(s):[emailprotected] way more professional than a generic Gmail or Yahoo address.

Already have a domain name and hosting? Go ahead and skip ahead tostep 3, where Ill explain how you can set up your website.

Remember: Since Im using Bluehost myself, Ive negotiated a special discount for visitors (67% OFF).

Once you click get started now, youll be taken to a page to select the hosting plan of your choice.

I went ahead and selected their basic option, which is a great choice for new websites. Plus, at the moment theyre running a special discount of $2.75/mo (usually its $7.99/mo)

The plus and prime plans are great, but you dont really need all the extra bells and whistles they offer unless there are millions of people flooding your site each day.

Save your hard earned cash and opt for the cheapest package to start out with.

If youre making a website for your business, your domain name should match your company name. For example:

If youre planning to set up a website for yourself, then

For this site (WebsiteSetup), I chose

Domain names usually end with .com, .org or , but in recent months, a huge amount of domain extensions (the end part of the web address, like .com) have come out, ranging from .agency to .pizza.

My best advice?Avoid the weird extensions and go with .com, .net or .org unless they perfectly describe what you have to offer and even then, see if you can find a more common name.

If youve already got a domain name, just enter it in and click Next on the I have a domain name form.

If you arent ready tochoose a domainright off the bat, you can do it at a later point in your website setup.

To create your account, just enter in your personal information on the create your account page.

Youll need to add in your first name, last name, country, street address, city, zip code, phone number, and email address. Your receipt will be sent to the email address you enter here.

Its optional to also add in your business name within this form.

Then, enter in your payment information to continue.

The next step in registering for a Bluehost account is to select you plan and package.

These are the last steps youll go through before your account creation is complete, so pay close attention to the extra options available, like Domain Privacy Protection.

Domain Privacy Protection is only $0.99 cents more per month, and keeps your personal information under wraps such as your name and address.

If you want to keep your website and domain information anonymous, go ahead and spend the extra $0.99 per month. If you dont, be sure to uncheck this box.

Once paid and registered, youll be able to create your password:

Do some brainstorming to come up with a unique domain name that reflects your future website, business or blog.

Secure your domain name and web hosting. For this I , but you can pick any other web host as long its reliable and simple.

UPDATE: I made a simple guide for Bluehost (which package to choose & how to install WordPress).

Once youve bought your domain name and set up your hosting, youre well on your way!

Now its time to get your website up and running. The first thing youll need to do is install WordPress to your domain.

There are two possible ways to install WordPress, one MUCH easier than the other.

Almost every reliable and well-established hosting company has integrated 1-click-installation for WordPress, which makes getting going a snap.

If you signed up withBluehostor any other similar hosting company, you should find your 1-click-installation in your account control panel.

Here are the steps you should follow (should be similar/same on all the major web hosting companies):

Look for the WordPress or Website icon.

Choose the domain where you want to install your website.

Click the Install Now button and you will get access to your new WordPress website.

If youre unable to locate it, look here:How to Install WordPress on Bluehost.

If for some odd reason (some hosting companies dont provide one-click-install for WordPress) you dont have the option to install WordPress automatically, look thismanual guidebelow:

Installing WordPress Manually (Click to expand)

2) Create a new folder on your desktop and unzip WordPress in it

3) Look for a file namedwp-config-sample.phpand rename it to:wp-config.php

4) Now open the wp-config.php (with notepad for example) and fill the following lines:

define(DB_NAME, database_name_here); Database name (if you dont know it, ask this from your hosting support)

define(DB_USER, username_here); Your hosting username

define(DB_PASSWORD, password_here); Your hosting password

After you have filled the gaps, save the file.

5) Now log into your hosting ftp (download FileZilla for that). The FTP address is usually , username and password are the same that you used to register to your host.

6) If there is any file named index delete it. After that upload all the files from your WordPress folder to your FTP server. I believe you can use drag n drop function in FileZilla.

7) Once you have completed the previous steps, go the URL:

Just fill in the forms and you are ready!

Pssst if they dont have 1-click-installation, maybe youre dealing with a bad host!

Once you have successfully installed WordPress to your domain, youll see a very basic yet clean site:

But you dont want to look like everyone else, do you?

Thats why you need a theme a design template that tells WordPress how your website should look. See a sample version below:

Heres where it gets fun: There are thousands of awesome, professionally designed themes you can choose from and customize for a site thats all your own.

If youre not sure how, type in:(replace yoursite with your domain).

This is what the WordPress dashboard looks like:

Everything is easily labelled. If youre feeling a bit overwhelmed, dont sweat it Im going to show you where to go next.

Once youre in the dashboard, youve got access to over 1500 free themes! Just look along the side bar for Appearance, then click Themes.

Ive even compiled a list of15 most popular free WordPress themes.

If you want something more professional or elegant than what you find here, you can head over where theres a HUGE library of themes to pick from at varying costs.

But before you do that, I really suggest you at least try spending some time browsing the free themes. Many of them are actually really professional and well made; so dont write them off.

As you can see above, installing a new theme for your website is very easy.

You can search for specific keywords and/or use filters to find themes that suit your style. Finding the perfect theme can take a while, but its worth it.

You should also look for themes that are responsive, as this means they will look good on any mobile device.

Just punch it in as one of your keywords, and youll be all set!

Once you have found a theme you like, installing it is as simple as clicking Install followed by Activate.

IMPORTANT: Changing themes wont delete your previous posts, pages and content. You can change themes as often as you want without having to worry about lose what youve created.

With your theme installed, youre ready to start creating content. Lets quickly run through some of the basics:

Want a Services page, or an About Me page (like I have on my menu at the top of the site)?

1. Look along the sidebar in the WordPress Dashboard for Pages – Add New.

2. Once youve clicked, youll find a screen that looks a lot like what youve maybe seen in Microsoft Word. Add text, images and more to build the page you want, then save it when youre done.

If you want your new page to be linked to in your navigation bar,

1. Save any changes youve made to the page by clicking Update

2. Click Appearance – Menus in the sidebar of the WordPress Dashboard

3. Find the page you created and add it to the list by clicking the checkbox next to it and then Add to Menu.

If you have a blog on your website, Posts will be where you turn to next. You can use different categories to group similar posts.

If you want to add a blog to your website, you can use different categories and posts. Lets say you want to create a category named Blog. To do so, simply add it to your menu and start making posts.

a. Create a new category by going to Posts – Categories

b. Create a blog post by going to Posts – Add New. Once youve finished writing your blog post, you need to add the right category for it.

Once youve created your category, simply add it to the menu, and youre in business!

In this section Ill cover some of the basic things Im asked about all the time that will help you to tweak your website.

Page titlesexplain to searchers what your website is about, and theyre also a big part of how search engines determine your rankings, so you want to be sure theyve got the keywords you want to target in them (but in a natural way, written for real people).

You should use a unique title on every page of your site. For example, my sites title is How to Make a Website.

(Cant find it? Just hold your mouse over the tab at the top of your web browser).

Taglinesare added at the end of titles across every page. My sites tagline is Step by Step Guide

In order to change the title and tagline on your website, go to Settings – General and fill in the form below:

Some websites (business/organisation sites mostly) dont want their visitors to be able to comment on their pages.

Heres how to shut comments off on WordPress pages:

1. While you are writing a new page, click Screen Options in the top right corner.

2. Click the Discussion box. The Allow Comments box will appear at the bottom.

Want to disable comments on every new page by default?

1. Go to Settings – Discussion and untick Allow people to post comments on new articles

Some people contact me saying theyre frustrated that their home page looks like a blog post. You can fix that by making your home page static.

A static page is a page that doesnt change. Unlike a blog, where the first new article will show up at the top every time, a static page will show the same content every time someone comes to the site like a home page youve designed.

2. Choose a static page that you have created. Front Page denotes your home page, Posts page is the front page of your blog (if your entire site isnt a blog).

If you dont choose a static page on your own, WordPress will take your latest posts and start showing them on your homepage.

Most WordPress themes have a sidebar on the right side (in some cases its on the left).

If you want to get rid of the sidebar or edit out items you do not need like Categories, Meta and Archives, which are usually pointless, heres how:

1. Go to Appearance – Widgets in the WordPress Dashboard.

2. From here, you can use drag and drop to add different boxes to your sidebar, or remove the items you dont want.

Theres also a HTML box a text box where you can use HTML code. For beginners, dont worry about this bit just drag and drop the elements youd like in your sidebar.

Plugins are extensions that are built to expand WordPress capabilities, adding features and functions to your site that dont come built-in.

Theyre shortcuts to getting your site to do what you want to, without having to build the feature from scratch.

You can use plugins to do everything from adding photo galleries and submission forms to optimizing your website and creating an online store.

To start installing plugins, go to Plugins – Add New and simply start searching.

Keep in mind that there are over 25,000 differentFREE plugins, so youve got a LOT to choose from!

Installation is easy once you find a plugin you like, just click Install.

BUT before you go and install every single one, I suggest you read this article:Things you need to know about using WP plugins.

To save you some time, Ive put together a list of the most popular plugins that webmasters find useful:

: My website has a contact form on my

page. Its an awesome feature to have, as people (like you!) can fill in the form and send me an email without logging into their own email provider. If you want to do something similar, definitely get this plugin.

Heres a step-by-step guide for setting it up

: If you want to make your WordPress site even more SEO-friendly, this plugin is a must-have. Its free, and its awesome. Youll be able to edit your title tags, meta descriptions and more, all from within the page itself no more fussing with WordPress settings.

: Interested in tracking your visitors/traffic and their behaviour? Just install the plugin, connect it with your Google account and youre ready to go.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg! Heres alist of recommended plugins by me.

If youve followed the steps in this guide, you should now have a fully-functional WordPress website! That wasnt so bad, was it?

Last but not least, keep improving your website.

Designing Your Own Shapes in Silhouettetudio Tips for Begners

Designing Your Own Shapes in Silhouette Studio: Tips for Beginners

Todays is perhaps one of the most important lessons Ive ever shared on Silhouette School…Im not even exaggerating. Today Im going to give you some tips on creating your own designs in Silhouette Studio.

Now why would you want to do this when you can just buy a design from the Design Store for .99 or trace a shape you find on the good ol The biggest reason is that if you want to sell something with a design on it (or the design itself as a decal) you need to have a commercial license for it and that costs money. But if you create your own designs theyre YOURS and youre free to use them however you want.

Now Im not saying you need to go out and create every single design, but honestly and truly there are so many that you can make your self in Silhouette Studio by simply combining a few – or one – basic shapes. I should also mention Im not a graphic designer. I was a news producer by trade before I started this whole mom blogger gig thing… so dont go thinking I have anything up on ya!

Lets look at this bunny. Its actually the design that got me thinking about why people dont create their own designs. A reader asked me where to find the design on the left and I honestly had no idea..I dont shop the Design Store too often. But looking at it in its most basic form, it just looked like a bunch of ovals. Sure enough…within just a few minutes I had myself an almost identical bunny as you can see on the right.

The first thing I suggest you do when you want to create a design is find some inspiration. In this case, obviously, its the original bunny….further down in the post youll see how I used an actual photo to create a design. Once you have your inspiration, look at it as smaller pieces, not one big shape.

So for the bunny, lets start with the body. By simply using the Draw an Ellipse (in blue along the left sidebar) tool you can create an oval shape. The feet are simple enough – just add two smaller ovals and move them into place.

You can weld as you go if its easier for you to see the final shape that way or you can do the full design and then weld it all together. Welding forms more than one shape into a single solid shape with a single cut line. To weld, select all of the shapes to be welded together and right click weld.

Now take a look at the head basic shape of the head in the original…by overlapping two ovals, one horizontally and one vertically, you can easily get the shape of the head.

If you find it difficult to really see the actual shape of the design because of all the crossing lines, fill in the designs with a solid color and change the line color to transparent. You can see here that the head looks much more like a head with pudgy cheeks when its filled in with brown.

Lastly, add the ears…again as long ovals. Before you weld the ears to the rest of the head create an internal offset to get the inner ear. Then drag them away so you can place them back in the design later. If you try to weld the design together with the internal offset on there, they will disappear.

So now you should have something like the image on the left and when you weld it all together youll be left with the image on the right!

Now pull the inner ears back into place and draw out three more ovals for the eyes and nose. Again, fill them with color as you go! I promise its so much easier to design in color!

Lets start with the bow. To create the bow….look at the original closely. Its basically two triangles welded with a circle in the middle. Use the draw apolygon toolto draw a polygon on the left sidebar and adjust the sides down to 3.

Mirror it so you get another identical triangle and then draw an oval or circle and place it in the center of the two overlapping triangles. Weld the three shapes together and BAM you have a basic bow shape.

Double click the design and the edit points will be revealed (2). To get to 3 use the mouse (and hold down shift) to click on the edit points you want curved. The selected edit points will turn white (2).

From the edit points window, click Make Curve and it will result in 3. Repeat on the other side to get to 4.

Now if you want the sides of the bow slightly in a little bit, like the original design we are getting inspiration from, you need to click the edit points again and create two new new edit points (circled) then pull it in toward the center.

Alright and for the last piece of the puzzle…lets make the mouth. Again, referring back to the original, it looks like we can start with an oval. Fill it in black to help you see it. 🙂 Now youre going to use a tool I bet youve never used before…the Draw an Arc tool. Click it and in the work area draw out out a line. After the line is drawn youll be able to pull out an arc.

Select the red arc line and then make an offset. Do you see where I am going with this?! Drag the original arc away and delete it. Now select the offset and mirror it to the right to create the other side (1) below.

Pull the oval into place (2) and weld all three shapes together (3). Select the shape right click release the compound path so you can delete that unwanted triangle (circled area in 3) and youre left with 4 when you fill in the shape with color.

Now put your bunny shapes all together and fill them in with color and change the line color to transparent and youve created your own shape!

For these exercising guys I looked at the shapes of actual people (errr…my handsome Mr) in the positions and then used a combination of rectangles and circles to create the stick figure-inspired exercisers.

The key to designing in Silhouette Studio is looking at images in a different way – look at them in their most minimal form and get creative with the basic shapes in Silhouette Studio and the possibilities to create your own designs are endless.

Another way to create original designs if youre artsy is to draw something with a marker, scan it, and trace it, then adjust points.

Melissa, Oh Melissa! I have been a subscriber for not very long and all of your tutorials have been so beneficial, but this one OMG. You have opened my eyes to so many more possibilities. Thank you so much and greatly appreciated!

Excellent this post set aside some an opportunity to peruse through a couple of sites and see what they bring to the table you visit

Nice Blog and also very helpful for beginners.

It just occurred to me while reading this that the scrolls and curves Im having so much trouble learning to do in Studio could start as circlesand ovals…hmmmm. Thank you!

I followed the tutorial down to the end. It was wonderful and I learned a lot. However, I have a problem with the bunny mouth. I did the oval, the arc with offset, mirrored the arc and welded to oval. But, now, I cannot remove the triangle. In fact, when I right click on the mouth shape, release compound path is not an option. I have selected the mouth and clicked on Release Compound Path under the Object Menu. It does not appear to have any effect even after I repeatedly clicked on Release. What am I doing wrong.?

Im trying to Pin this article and it keeps saying that this article has spam? Any help on saving this article?

Thanks for leaving a comment! We get several hundred comments a day. While we appreciate every single one of them its nearly impossible to respond back to all of them, all the time. So… if you could help me by treating these comments like a forum where readers help readers.

In addition, dont forget to look for specific answers by using the Search Box on the blog. If youre still not having any luck, feel free to email me with your question.

How does this work? What does CustomMade do?

CustomMade makes fine jewelry. But what sets us apart from other jewelry stores and websites is that every single piece we make is one-of-a-kind.

To do that, we have a team of jewelry experts and designers that will work with you to design your necklace – whether you already know what you want, have a few general ideas, or really dont know where to start.

We also know just how uncomfortable it can be to buy fine jewelry online when you dont know a lot about it. Theres an overwhelming amount of information about metals, gems, design styles, comfort, maintenance, and more! To help bridge that gap, we strive to offer the absolute best – and most honest – customer service in the world. There are often many right options, so our job is to help you understand all the trade-offs so that you can make a well informed decision. Weve done our job right when we help you find the best materials, options, and details for your budget and lifestyle.

Tell us a little about yourself and what youre looking for, and well guide you through the process of creating the perfect piece of jewelry – all online, from the comfort of your home.

Typically, your custom piece will be in your hands 2-3 weeks after weve finalized your design. However, because each project is different, the time it takes to complete your project may vary. Heres a rough breakdown of how long each part of our process takes:

When it comes to creating your design, well work at your pace. Some customers only need to exchange a few messages with us – well often be ready to make their piece within a few days. Others may prefer to design and iterate with us over many weeks, or even months.

Once youve approved a design, well manufacture your piece, finishing all the details by hand. When its ready, well send you photographs of your finished piece so you can give us your seal of approval before we ship it to you.

We offer free shipping within the US via FedEx or USPS, and we ship international packages via DHL Worldwide Express, one of the fastest services available. Depending on location, international shipments can sometimes be delayed by local customs for inspection, which can extend the delivery time.

Unlike other jewelers and jewelry stores, each piece of jewelry we produce starts off as a brand new idea. Because of that, its difficult to know how much a piece is going to cost without knowing a bit more about the idea you have in mind.

The easiest way to figure out how much your piece will cost is to start a consultation with us and let us know what youre looking for – we can provide an estimate with only a few details.

Were able to produce heirloom-quality custom jewelry for prices that are comparable to what youd pay for similar quality pieces off the shelf. If youre purchasing a piece of jewelry that you want to last a lifetime (like an engagement ring, anniversary present, or family heirloom), then we offer the opportuntity to have something made just for you for roughly the cost of something thats been mass-produced.

However, custom designing and making every piece one-of-a-kind at such high quality means we cant offer jewelry at the prices of fast fashion brands.

When do I get to see a design? Do I have to pay first?

Theres no charge to discuss your design and price out options with our team. We request a deposit prior to producing 3D models and renderings of your design and that deposit goes toward the final cost of producing your piece.

Just have a Jack O Lantern? If all you have is a Jack O Lantern pumpkin (no pie pumpkin or butternut squash) thensee this page for the recipe to make a pie from an ordinary carving pumpkin.Directions for Making Pumpkin Pie from Scratch

Yield:It really depends on the size of the pumpkin and the size of your pie plate. If you use a 6 pie pumpkin and a full deep dish 9 pie plate, then it should fill that pie to the brim and maybe have enough extra for either a small (4 inch) shallow pie (or a crustless pie – see step 11).

Some people manage to make 2 full pies, especially if they use shallow pie plates and/or 8 inch pie plates.

a large microwaveable bowl or large pot

1 large (10 inch) deep-dish pie plate and pie crust (Click here for illustrated pie crust instructions!they will open in a new window) – or two small pie plates (9 inch) and crusts (Metric: a 10 inch pie plate is a pie plate with a diameter of 25 cm, and a depth of almost 5 cm)

a pie pumpkin(see step 1; you can use different types of pumpkin or even a butternut squash)

1 cup sugar (see step 9 for alternatives, such as Stevia, honey or Splenda) (metric: 200 grams)

1.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon (metric: 3.8 grams)

1 teaspoon ground cloves (metric: 2 grams)

1 teaspoon ground allspice (metric: 2 grams) ( Other names for allspice are: Piment de la Jamaïque, Maustepippuri, Kryddpeppar, Piment, Korzennik lekarski, Ienibahar, Pimentovnk pravý)

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (metric: 1.25 grams)

Optional: 1/2 teaspoon mace (which youll find in the very old pumpkin pie recipes)

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional) (metric: 20 grams)

1/2 teaspoon salt (optional, I dont use any)

4 large eggs – to reduce fat and cholesterol, you may use egg whites (like Egg Beaters) instead, and vegans may want to use Ener-G (see this page for more information about egg substitutes)

3 cups pumpkin glop (ok… sieved, cooked pumpkin) (metric: 0.7 litre)

1.5 cans (12oz each) of evaporated milk (I use the nonfat version) for best results. (metric: each can is about .35 liter, or about a half liter total))

Note for the UK and Europe: Nestle Carnation has two sizes of cans in England: 170g and 410g – the large 410g can is 14 fl. oz. and the small 170g can is 5 fl. oz. (the same as the small can in the US). Use one of each (19 fl. oz. total) in your pie.

If you cant get canned evaporated milk, make your own from nonfat dried milk and make it twice as concentrated as the directions on the box call for!

If you cant get nonfat dried milk, just use milk.

If you are lactose-intolerant, use lactose-free milk or soy milk.

One visitor tried fresh whipping cream (unwhipped) and reported the pie turned out wonderful!

Note:if you do not have cinnamon, cloves, allspice and ginger, you can substitute 3 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice. Its not exactly the same, but it will do.

Note:If you cant get evaporated milk, you can substitute nonfat dried milk – make it twice as concentrated as the directions on the box say to reconstitute it. It wont be the same as evaporated milk, but it ought to come close.

Yield: One 9-inch deep dish pie or two 8-inch shallow pies

Pie pumpkins are smaller, sweeter, less grainy textured pumpkins than the usual jack-o-lantern types. Grocery stores usually carry them in late September through December in the some parts of the country, they are also called sugar pumpkins or even cheese pumpkins. Go figure that one. Note: the Libbys can of cooked pumpkin is just there for reference – it is the small can, so that gives you an idea of the size of a typical pie pumpkin.

Theyre only about 6 to 8 inches in diameter (about 20 to 24 inches in circumference).TIP:If youre in a pinch and cant find a pie pumpkin, heres a tip: butternut squash taste almost the same! And many farmers will tell you that Neck Squash, Jarradale Blue Hubbard, Cinderella and Long Island Cheese winter squashes are all considered to make a better tasting pumpkin pie. Commercial canned pumpkin is from a variety of butternut, not true pumpkins! If you insist on using a regular Jack O Lantern type pumpkin, you may need to add about 25% more sugar and run the cooked pumpkin through a blender or food processor to help smooth it out.

Just like selecting any squash, look for one that is firm, no bruises or soft spots, and a good orange color. One 6 pie pumpkin usually makes one 10 inch deep dish pieand a bit extra; or two 9 inch shallow pies!If you have extra goop, you can always pour it into greased baking pans and make a crustless mini pie with the excess (and the cooked pies do freeze well!)

If you live in the Far East (Thailand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, etc.) and cannot get a pumpkin or a butternut squash, Im told that Japanese pumpkins make a great substitute. Just cube the meat into small cubes and steam them for 35 minutes. The rest of the preparation is the same and Im told the taste is great.

Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool or warm water, no soap.

Cut the pumpkin in half. A serrated knife and a sawing motion works best – a smooth knife is more likely to slip and hurt you!A visitor suggests using a hand saw.

And scrape the insides. You want to get out that stringy, dangly stuff that coats the inside surface. I find a heavy ice cream scoop works great for this.

The seeds can be used either to plant pumpkins next year, or roasted to eat this year! Place them in a bowl of water and rub them between your hands. then pick out the orange buts (throw that away) and drain off the water. Spread them out on a clean towel or paper towel to dry and theyre ready to save for next years planting or roast.Click here for roasting instructions!(opens in a new window)

There are several ways to cook the pumpkin; just choose use your preferred method. Most people have microwaves and a stove, so Ill describe both of those methods here. But others make good arguments in favor of using a pressure cooker or baking in the oven. At the end of this document, Ive included alternative instructions to replace step 4, if youd rather use a different method.

You can also bake the prepared pumpkin in the oven, just like a butternut squash. This method takes the longest. Basically, you cut and scoop out the pumpkin as for the other methods, place it cut side down into a covered oven container. Cover the ovenproof container (with a lid), and pop it in an 350 F (165 C) oven. It normally takes about 45 minutes to 90 minutes (it can vary a lot!); just test it periodically by sticking it with a fork to see if it is soft!

You can also cook it on the stovetop; it takes about the same length of time in a steamer (20 to 30 minutes). I use a double pot steamer, but you could use an ordinary large pot with a steamer basket inside it!:

Remove the stem, and put the pumpkin into a microwavea

ble. You may need to cut the pumpkin further to make it fit. The fewer the number of pieces, the easier it will to scoop out the cooked pumpkin afterwards.

Put a couple of inches of water in the bowl, cover it, and put in the microwave. I cook it on high until it is soft. That may take 20 minutes or more, so like anything else, try 15 minutes, see how much it is softened, then do 5 minute increments until it is soft

Whichever method you use, cook the pumpkin until it is soft and will separate from the skin.

Step 5 – Scoop out the cooked pumpkin

Whether you cook the pumpkin on the stove, microwave, or even the oven, once it is cooked until it is soft, it is easy to scoop out the guts with a broad, smooth spoon, (such as a tablespoon). Use the spoon to gently lift and scoop the cooked pumpkin out of the skin. It should separate easily an in fairly large chucks, if the pumpkin is cooked enough.

Many times the skin or rind will simply lift off with your fingers (see the photo at left) . Ill bet you didnt realize making your own pumpkin glop… err, puree was this easy!

Note: there are many varieties of pumpkin and some make better pies that other (due to sugar content, flavor, texture and water content. Drier, sweeter, fine-grained pies; the small (8 across) ones called pie pumpkins are best.

If your pumpkin puree has standing, free water, you may want to let it sit for 30 minutes and then pour off any free water. That will help prevent you pie from being too watery! Beyond, that, I have not found that the water makes a difference -I wouldnt be TOO concerned about it! The recipe accounts for the liquid!

Tip on using the liquid:Comments from a visitor on November 26, 2009:Any suggestions or use for the pumpkin juice left over after draining the cooked pumpkin? I keep thinking there must be some good use – maybe soup or in cookies or something?

Yes!!You can use it as a replacement for water, and in some cases, milk, in recipes, like soups, cookies, breads, muffins and even pancakes and waffles, where it adds a very nice flavor!

Tip from a visitor:I make my own pumkin pies from scratch all the time. To eliminate watery pumpkin I strain my pureed pumpkin through a cloth overnight. If I use frozen pumpkin I do the same again as it thaws out. It works great and my pies cook beautifully.

Another visitor reported success using coffee filters in a sieve to drain out excess water.

Again, dont go to great lengths to remove water; the recipe accounts for the fact that fresh pumpkin is more watery than canned!

To get a nice, smooth consistency, I use a Pillsbury hand blender. By blending it, you give the pie a smooth, satiny texture; rather than the rough graininess that is typical of cooked squashes.

A regular blender works, too (unless you made a few frozen daiquiris and drank them first..). Or a food processor or even just a hand mixer with time and patience.

With the hand blender, it just takes 2 or 3 minutes!

Another visitor says using a food mill, like a Foley Food Mill, with a fine screen, accomplishes the blending/pureeing very well, too!

The pumpkin is now cooked and ready for the pie recipe. Get the frozen daiquiris out from step 6 and take a break! 🙂

Note:Youmayfreeze the pureeor pie filling to use it later! Just use a freezer bag or other container to exclude as much air as possible. It should last a year or more in a deep freezer On the other hand, you may NOT can it:See this page for the safety reasons why you shouldnt can it.)

Yes, I know there are ready-made pie crusts in the frozen section at the store, but they really are bland and doughy. A flaky crust is easy to make! Again, note that unless you use large, deep dish pie plates, you may have enough for 2 pies.

It is also time to start preheating the oven. Turn it on and set it to 425 F (210 C, for those in Europe)

Click here for illustrated pie crust instructions!

All the hard work is behind you! Heres where it gets really easy. If you start with a fresh 8 pie pumpkin, you will get about 3 cups of cooked, mashed pumpkin. Th

e right amount of ingredients for this is as follows:

If you are using artificial sweeteners (Splenda or Stevia) youll find that they taste prettty good, but youll get better results when you do a 50-50 mix with sugar or honey. And diabetics, you can use Stevia or Splenda alone, in place of sugar and get pretty decent results.

one half teaspoon salt (optional, I dont use any)

3 cups pumpkin glop (ok… sieved, cooked pumpkin)

1.5 cans (12oz each) of evaporated milk (I use the nonfat version) (note for those in France: evaporated milk in France is called lait concentre; lait evapore is powder)

Mix well using a hand blender or mixer.

Note:You may substitute 4 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice instead of the cinnamon, cloves, allspice and ginger. But I think you get better results with the separate spices.

Note:The vast majority of people tell me this is the best pumpkin pie theyve ever had. Its light and fluffy – however… if you want a heavy, more dense pie, use 3 eggs instead of 4 and 1 can of evaporated milk instead of 1.5)

Some people like to bake the pie crust in the oven for 3 minutes before filling it. I dont and the pies turn out great!

I like a deep, full pie, so I fill it right up to about one quarter to one half inch from the very top.

Dont be surprised if the mixture is very runny! It may start as a soupy liquid, but itwillfirm up nicely in the oven! Note: the pie crust is brown because I used whole wheat flour! Tastes the same, but is healthier.

TIP:If you put the empty pie crust on your oven rack, with the rack slid partially out, you can fill it there and avoid making a mess while carrying the pie to the oven!

TIP:What do you do if you end up with more filling than will fit in your pie crust(s)?Easy! Of course, you can make another, smaller pie crust and fill a small pie pan… or just grease any baking dish, of a size that the extra filling will fill to a depth of about 2 inches (see the photo at right), and pour the extra filling in.. then bake it. It will be a crustless pumpkin pie that kids especially love! You can also use it in makingpumpkin muffinsorpumpkin bread!

TIP:You may want to cover the exposed edges of the crust with strips of aluminum foil to prevent them from burning! Some people make their own crust cover by cutting the rim off of a disposable aluminum pie pan!

Bake at 425 F (210 C ) for the first 15 minutes, then turn the temperature down to 350 F ( 175 C ) and bake another 45 to 60 minutes, until a clean knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Here is the finished pie, right out of the oven:

I use a blunt table knife to test the pie. The one at left has already been stuck in the pie, and you see it comes out pretty clean, when the pie is done.

Warm or chilled, with whipped cream , ice cream or nothing at all – its great!

You can even freeze the pie after cooking it. I just lay a piece of plastic wrap (cling film) tight on the pie, after it cools down, then pop it in the freezer.

Later, I take the frozen pie out of the freezer, put it in the fridge for about 24 hours, and then either heat it in the oven (350 F for about 15 minutes; just to warm it up) or the microwave for a few minutes.

Stovetop steaming- Place your steaming basket or grid in the bottom of a large pot. Put enough water so it wont boil dry in 20 minutes, and yet is not so high that the pumpkin is touching the water level. You may need to add more water during the cooking. Add the pumpkin prepared in step 3, and get the steamer going. The cooking time is only between 8 and 12 minutes, depending on the range (gas or electric), and the pumpkin literally falls off the skin.

Pressure cooker- Place your grid in the bottom of the pressure cooker. If your pressure cooker came with directions, follow those for pumpkin and/or winter squash, like butternut squash. If, like most people, youve long since lost the directions, try this: Add enough water to just touch the bottom of the grid or shelf that you will place the pumpkin on. Add the pumpkin prepared in step 3, put the lid with the gasket, the weight and anything else your cooker requires in place, and turn the heat on high. Once it starts hissing, turn it to medium or medium high. The cooking time should only be about 10 minutes, and the pumpkin should literally fall out of its skin.

Crockpot- Clean and slice the pumpkin and set the temperature to either high or low (depending on how soon you are able to get back to the kitchen). The crockpot is forgiving enough that the pumpkin can be left in it for a time even after it is tender, at least on the low setting. Turn off the crockpot and let the pumpkin sit in it awhile. A lot of liquid will be released as the pumpkin cools. Once the pumpkin is cool enough to handle, scrape out the flesh, place in a wire strainer, and mash with a spoon to release additional liquid. Leave the pumpkin in the strainer and place in the refrigerator for several hours to drain off any remaining liquid.

Making a pie with a Jack O Lantern: Comments from a visitor on November 10, 2008:

I have a suggestion for those who want to use a jack o lantern pumpkin. My son was so happy when he went on his first field trip to the pumpkin patch. He made me promise to make pumpkin pies with his big giant pumpkin. I did just as you said baked it, put it in the frig over night. Then I put the pieces in a pot and cooked it until it was like mush added a big cinnamon stick and and the sugar boiled some of the water out and 4 great pies. Thank you for your recipe it worked wonder full!!!

Excess pumpkin goop?Comments from a visitor on November 30, 2009:I love your pumpkin pie recipe! Ive used it for two years now and the recipe is so dependable and thorough. One great way to use up the leftover pie filling is using it to make Pumpkin French Toast – it already had the eggs, milk, and spice. Just dip the bread in the filling and throw on the skillet. The toast goes great with a bit of melted butter, powdered sugar and some maple sugar!

Covering the edges of the crust: Comments from a visitor on November 19, 2008:After having lost my old beloved recipe, I tried this one and have to say this one is top notch! One tip that might help to pass on (especially to new pie makers) is to cover the edges with aluminum foil to prevent the crust from burning. It really works and makes those yummy pie crusts as delicious as the rest of the pie!

Mashing the cooked pumpkin: Comments from a visitor on November 26, 2008:Hello, great site here. I tried your pumpkin pie recipe and it came out great. Just wanted to add my two cents on pumpkin pie making. After cooking the pumpkin and scooping it out, you can use a potato ricer to mash it. When you first put the pumpkin in ricer and squeeze the handles together you get a decent amount of water squeezed out first. Then I put the ricer over bowl and squeeze the pumpkin out. The ricer mashes and gets water out at same time. Plus, another good thing is that a lot of the fiberous strings in pumpkin gets trapped at bottom of the ricer cup and not in the pumpkin puree. I bought my potato ricer at bed bath and beyond for fifteen bucks, so its cheap too. Hope this helps.

Maple syrup instead of sugar:Comments from a visitor on December 08, 2009:Really like your site wanted to comment on the sugar alternatives , we use maple syrup 1 cup boiled down for thickness adds great flavor. Thanks

Comments from a visitor on November 19, 2008:I learned a trick about baking large squashes and pumpkins many years ago. I just poke a few holes in it, put it on a baking sheet whole, and bake it at around 325 degrees until the squash/pumpkin is tender. When its cool, its easy to cut in half, scoop out the seeds, and peel. It is also much less watery this way. This has always worked well for me. You do have to start a little earlier, though. Baking it this way and then letting it get cool enough to handle

Comments from a visitor on November 20, 2008:I have made pumpkin pies from pumpkins for years and the best, most flavorful method is to cut in half, oil and roast, face down on high heat — it carmelizes a bit, then I do drain it and boil down the water til it is thick and medium caramel color and add it to the puree — adds a lot of flavor. yum 🙂

Oven prep method: Comments from a visitor on November 26, 2008:Another way to prep pumpkin that seems to get a consistent non-stringy finish regardless of pumpkin species: 1. Halve pumpkin and remove innards. 2. Place halves face-down on a greased cookie sheet. 3. Roast at 400 long enough for skins to visibly darken. 4. All species will come out firm, golden, and generally already separated from the shell. 5. Puree can be accomplished with a potato masher if desired. More watery pumpkins will drain and cook like pie pumpkins. Though messier in your oven, I have the best luck using a flat cookie sheet that allows the water to drain off and burn in the oven.

Starting with a frozen pumpkin: Comments from a visitor on November 27, 2008:Just wanted to add to your ideas about making pumpkin pies out of fresh pumpkins. I was preparing to make my pies for Thanksgiving and realized I had forgot to buy pumpkin. I read your site about the different ways to make pumpkin pies from fresh pumpkin ~ and, having pumpkins on my front porch for fall decorations, I went and grabbed one to use only to discover it had been frozen solid! (Our temps had dropped to 7 a few days before.) I had no choice but to give it a try. As it started to thaw it became soft. Heres what I did: Cut out the stem, cut the whole thing in half, scooped out the seeds, peeled the halves – I actually cut those in half to make peeling easier – and cubed the remaining into little bitty pieces. I put it all in a large covered sauce pan and slowly cooked it. Once they got soft enough I took a potato masher to it and cooked some more. Worked GREAT! Ill put it in a blender before using, but it was easy! Just cook real slow so as not to burn or scorch. But the frozen pumpkin started the break-down process and made cooking them much quicker and simpler. Just thought it a good alternative if anyone was interested. Thanks for the great site!!

What to do with extra pumpkin goop: Comments from a visitor on November 03, 2009:I didnt read too carefully and only bought one 9 in pie crust, I had so much left over mixture! I quickly grabbed my muffin pans and those cute little paper inserts- I put approx 5-6 mini marshmallows in each one then filled 16 spots with the mixture. It was exactly the right amount of mixture. Let them sit for just a moment to allow the mellows to rise to the top (always add the mellows first because when pouring the mixture on top of them it coats the mellow to make the top brown in the oven much better) then finished filling them (the levels lower as the mellows rise). Baked at 350 for approx 30 minutes. They were GREAT and so easy to bring to work the following morning! as a side note – i have 2 more pumpkins and look forward to making more goodies in the coming week or so. I LOVE this site, its easy to follow and with all your pictures I know im doing things right. I DONT cook or bake on a regular basis. In fact, this was the very first pie i EVER attempted – homemade OR canned. Anyway, i think that the mini-pies are really great addition to those wishing to share the desert with co-workers or family members. no cutting or serving. also, the marshmellows add a little something! mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmm good! ~J

Pumpkin Pie -Another idea for left over pie filling – Turn it into muffins. I had about 2 1/2 cups of left over filling (all ingredients combined) and thought, what can I do with this? I then I looked at the pumpkin bread recipe and thought, hmmm not too dissimilar. So heres what I did – I made pumpkin muffins!!! I took about 1 1/2 cups of plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder and mixed together, then added 1/3 cup oil and the 2 1/2 cups of my left over mixture. Put it into a muffin tin and baked till done (about 20mins cooking at the same time as the pie) turned out great! The amount of flour used would depend on your leftover but I used same approx ratios as the pumpkin bread recipe.

Using a Cinderella pumpkin- Be sure to drain the pumpkin very well before mashing it or putting it through the food processor. These pumpkins are very runny. It should be similar in consistency to canned pumpkin – otherwise the pies may not set up and be runny.

Pumpkins roasting over an open fire? Comments from a visitor on November 08, 2009:I took another alternative to cooking my pumpkin… I wrapped it in aluminum foil and put it out in a bon fire… cooked it really well. Then let it chill in the night air, the next morning it was so easy to work with. It was great and very energy saving.
