Red-hot planet: All-time heat records have been set all over the world during the past week

Simulation of maximum temperatures on July 3 from American (GFS) weather model at two meters above the ground. (University of Maine Climate Reanalyzer)

(This article, originally published Tuesday, was updated Wednesday to add all-time heat records at Mount Washington, N.H., and Tbilisi, Georgia set since Monday. On Thursday, the story was updated to include information on heat-related deaths in Canada and extraordinary heat in Siberia. On Friday, it was updated to add the likely all-time heat record in Africa and Southern California.)

From the normally mild summer climes of Ireland, Scotland and Canada to the scorching Middle East to Southern California, numerous locations in the Northern Hemisphere have witnessed their hottest weather ever recorded over the past week.

Large areas of heat pressure or heat domes scattered around the hemisphere led to the sweltering temperatures. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporationreportsthe heat is to blame for at least 54 deaths in southern Quebec, mostly in and near Montreal, which endured record high temperatures.

In Northern Siberia, along the coast of the Arctic Ocean where weather observations are scarce model analyses showed temperatures soaring 40 degrees above normal on July 5, to over 90 degrees. It is absolutely incredible and really one of the most intense heat events Ive ever seen for so far north, wrote meteorologist Nick Humphrey, who offers more detailon this extraordinary high-latitude hot spell on his blog.

On Thursday, Africa likely witnessed its hottest temperature ever reliably measured. Ouargla, Algeria soared to 124.3 degrees (51.3 Celsius). If verified, it would surpass Africas previous highest reliable temperature measurement of 123.3 degrees (50.7 Celsius) set July 13, 1961, in Morocco.

[Africa may have witnessed its all-time hottest temperature Thursday: 124 degrees in Algeria]

No single record, in isolation, can be attributed to global warming. But collectively, these heat records are consistent with the kind of extremes we expect to see increase in a warming world.

Lets take a tour around the world of the recent hot-weather milestones.

A massive and intense heat dome has consumed the eastern two-thirds of the United States and southeast Canada since late last week. Its not only been hot but also exceptionally humid. Here are some of the notable all-time records set:

set its all-time high-temperature of 111 degreeson July 6, along with several other locations in Southern California.

tiedits all-time high-temperature record of 105 degrees on June 28.

, N.H.,tiedits all-time warmest low temperature of 60 degrees on July 2.

, Vt.,set its all-time warmest low temperatureever recorded of 80 degrees on July 2.

recorded itshighest temperature in recorded history, dating back 147 years, of 97.9 degrees (36.6 Celsius) on July 2. The city also postedits most extreme midnight combination of heat and humidity.

posted its most extreme combination of heat and humidityon July 1.

[Oppressive heat dome engulfs the Northeast and it will spread west this weekend]

The dome of high pressure set to develop this weekend over the eastern US is IMPRESSIVE. Current foretasted strength would make this the strongest ridge of high pressure on record for this time of year over the last 30 m/A5bTh5CvOV

Excessive heat torched the British Isles late last week. The stifling heat caused roads and roofs to buckle, the Weather Channel reported, and resulted in multiple all-time record highs:

had its hottest day on record, hitting 89.4 degrees (31.9 Celsius). Previously, it was reported that Scotland set its hottest temperature on record of 91.8 degrees (33.2 Celsius) on June 28 in Motherwell, about 12 miles southeast of Glasgow. However, upon further evaluation, the U.K. Met Officedetermined the record was invaliddue to an artificial heating source near the temperature sensor.

hit89.6 degrees (32 Celsius), its all-time record.

hit85.1 degrees (29.5 Celsius) on June 28, its all-time record.

hit 86.2 degrees(30.1 Celsius) on June 29, its all-time record.

How hot? So hot the Glasgow Science Centre roof is melting a bit 🔆🔆🔆

A large dome of high pressure, or heat dome, has persistently sat on top of Eurasia over the past week, resulting in some extraordinarily hot weather:

: On July 4, the capital citysoared to 104.9 degrees (40.5 Celsius), its all-time record.

: On July 2, the capital citysoared to 107.6 degrees (42 Celsius), a record high for July and tying its record for any month.

topped or matched their warmest June temperatureson record on the 28th.

A GFS model shows a large upper-level high-pressure zone, or heat dome, over Eurasia on Monday. )

Aswe reported,Quriyat, Oman, posted the worlds hottest low temperature ever recorded on June 28: 109 degrees (42.6 Celsius).

These various records add to a growing list of heat milestones set over the past 15 months that are part and parcel of a planet that is trending hotter as greenhouse gas concentrations increase because of human activity:

In April,Pakistan posted the hottest temperature ever observed on Earth during the monthof 122.4 degrees (50.2 Celsius).

Dallas had never hit 90 degrees in November before, but it did sothree times in four daysin 2017.

In late October 2017, temperatures soared to 108 degrees in Southern California, the hottest weather on record so late in the season in the entire United States.

On Sept. 1, 2017, San Francisco hit 106 degrees, smashing its all-time hottest temperature.

In late July 2017, Shanghairegistered its highest temperature in recorded history, 105.6 degrees (40.9 Celsius).

In mid-July,Spain posted its highest temperature recordedwhen Cordoba Airport (in the south) hit 116.4 degrees (46.9 Celsius).

In July 2017, Death Valley, Calif., enduredthe hottest month recorded on Earth.

In late June 2017,Ahvaz, Iran, soared to 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit(53.7 Celsius) that countrys all-time hottest temperature.

In late May 2017, the western town of Turbat in Pakistan hit 128.3 degrees (53.5 Celsius), tying the all-time highest temperature in that country and the world-record temperature for May,according to Masters.

Why are more than 100 television meteorologists around the world wearing this tie?

The U.S. just observed its warmest 3-, 4-, and 5-year spans on record

The U.S. just had its warmest May in history, blowing past 1934 Dust Bowl record

Tell me which one is correct please (or both)

Is there any difference between them?

realmente siempre es visto y escuchado last week.

I have always heard last week but today while I was talking to a friend of mine I dont know why I said past week knowing the right way is last week, anyways he said nothing (I guessed it was not wrong then) so I would like a native speaker to tell me if I was wrong, because my friend understood perfectly…

Heres a thread you can read about this topic:

Anybody could tell me if my examples are right, wrong, both right, both wrong? I have read lots of threads, but none answers my question, all of them are about months, years, etc etc, I only want to know if I can say past week in the sense of last week.

Las dos frases son correctas, y generalmente significan lo mismo (pero depende del contexto).

This past week begins today and counts back seven days.

Last week is the calendar week preceding the present week.

In the sentence above, in the last week has the same meaning as this past week.

This phrase can also be used to mean the last week of the period being discussed.

The difference is past week would be to count back exactly a week from now, while last week is the calendar week preceding the present week. Past week is usually used when going through something/event. Last week is usually used to point to that particular week.

For the past week, it was raining heavily.

The past week refers to themost recentweek. If this is the fourth week of July, the past week would be the third week of July.

The last week refers to thefinalweek in a series. If the fourth week of July is the last, or final of four weeks of July, the current week would be thelastweek of July.

Last week can be used for the past week, if the implication is that the past week is the last of all weeksup to now.

The converse is not necessarily true; the past week cannot generally be used to describe the last week. Unless we were in say, the first week of August, in which case the past week would describe the last week of July.

Please look at the following and tell me what the difference between them is

During the past week, Chris has answered the phone.

During the past week, Chris answered the phone.

When I say during the past week does it mean the week still continues? I mean does it extend up to the present time of speaking? Or has it ended?

When do I use Present perfect and simple past with during?

In the past week,Chris has answered the phone.

In the past week,Chris answered the phone.

Also is there any differencebetween past week and last week?

This is really two questions, the second of which is answeredhere.

Its the verb tense that tells you if the past week has ended. With the simple past, it has. With the present perfect, almost certainly not.

Alan sir, I am confused now. On the one hand we use during the past week so that means irrespective of the tense the week continues till present and there can be no question of it ending, as during the past week means it is continuing. This is my understanding of it. When you say the week has not ended what do you mean by that? Does it mean we are in the third or fourth day of the week? And when you say the week has ended does it mean we are in the seventh day of the week? This is all confusing. Please clear the doubt sir. Many thanks

The present perfect can generally, with few exceptions, only be used with an adverbial of time thatincludesthe moment of speaking.

Meanwhile, the simple past (or: past simple) cannot include an adverbial of time that includes the present. On this point, seeWhen a sentence includes a word like today that indicates present time, can a past form of verb be used?

During the past week, Chris has answered the phone.

the time periodthe past weekis not considered to be over when the speaker says this sentence.

During the past week, Chris answered the phone.

the time periodthe past weekis considered to be all in the past, i.e.,not includingthe present moment.

During the past week refers to the 7 or so days leading up to today. It may or may not have ended. Last week refers to the period from Sunday that ended with the most recent Saturday (or depending on context it may refer to Monday to Friday). Last week has ended.

Readin I didnt understand what you mean by the week may or may not have ended. During the past week as you say means it extends upto the present, so the week continues and cannot end. So please tell me the example of when the week may have ended.

Passed vs Past

Sandi from Inspiration for Writers wrote to ask:

Can you do a segment on Past vs. Passedif you havent already? Too many get these words mixed up.

The wordpastlocates something in time, and sometimes in space. It can be

used as an adjective, noun, or adverb.

The first definition which the OED gives for past as an adjective isGone by in time; elapsed; done with; over. For example:

When attributed to a group of people, past can also meanHaving served ones term of office; former.(OED)

And in grammar, we have more examples of past being used as an adjective, such as in past tense and past participle.

The main meaning for the noun form of past, given by the OED, isThe time that has gone by; a time, or all of the time, before the present.

As a preposition, pastcan mean:Beyond in time; after; beyond the age for or time of; (in stating the time of day) so many minutes, or a quarter or half of an hour, after a particular hour.(OED)

It can also be used for location:Beyond in place; further on than; at or on the further side of; to a point beyond.(OED)

The first meaning the OED cites forpastbeing used as an adverb isSo as to pass or go by; by.For example:

Passedis the past participle of the verb to pass. It can be an intransitive verb (one which doesnt require an object) or a transitive verb (one which requires both a subject and one or more objects).

To pass meansTo proceed, move forward, depart; to cause to do this. (OED)This can refer to movement forwards in time, in space, or in life (such as to pass an examination).

The weeks passed quickly.

(Intransitive: subject the weeks and no object).

I passed all my exams!

(Transitive: subject I and object my exams.)

He passed the ball well during the match earlier.

(Transitive: subject He and object the ball.)

When do past and passed get confused?

Often, writers muddle the wordspastandpassedin sentences such as:

But the word should bepassed, as (in this sentence) its the past participle of the verb to pass. An easy way to tell is to rewrite the sentence in the present tense, as though youre describing something which is happening currently:

Its correct to usepast. The verb in this sentence is walked, and the past is acting as an adverb.

Most of the time, passedis a verb, as described above. There are a few occasions when it can be used as a noun or an adjective, though. For example:

194 Responses to Passed vs Past

The heroes walked past a village on their way towards the mountains.

My house is the one just past the turning.

The ball sped past the goalkeeper.

These are most definitely wrong; because the word is being used to describe the passing in location. Half PASSED five, because youre half way beyond 5 unto 6, not half way PAST five, because you cant be past in the present.

The ball sped PASSED the goal keeper, because it passed him by. It didnt PAST him by, did it? The ball traveled in reverse through time to get by him?

But the word should be passed, as (in this sentence) its the past participle of the verb to pass. An easy way to tell is to rewrite the sentence in the present tense, as though youre describing something which is happening currently:

Applies to all of the use cases above; which are clearly wrong and should all be using Passed instead of Past.

Past does not mean beyond; it means the opposite, it refers to something that has happened already, not something that is going to happen in the future.

Using past as an adverb is actually wrong. The adverb form of past is as follows;

The troops marched past.

This is wrong and only added because its used incorrectly often. Its like how Aint is in the dictionary now.

having completed the act of passing.

The troops marched passed.

Because they have just passed by you. They cant have PAST by you.

When people say This passed Monday they arent saying This Past Monday because its logically connected to the phrase This passing Monday. Passing does not become PAST in its past tense, it becomes PASSED in its past tense.

That said; they are both legitimately true, although the context of them changes the meaning. This Passed Monday, refers to the Monday that most recently passed by. This PAST Monday, can mean any Monday on the calendar, because it has no relevant context to point its time. Passed pin points it as the most recent, specifically because its an extension and conclusion of the sentence This passing Monday.

The month just past was boring or The month just passed was boring

Is this correct: Its long passed 15 minutes, you need to text me. From a text message.

I am wondering if someone can confirm these sentences as correct.

The days for mourning are now past.

The days for mourning have now passed.

What about this sentence? Correct as written?

The time for joking has come and passed.

I corrected a friend that wrote that she was passed being angry, I wrote that it should be past being angry. She wrote back that not in that case, but I still maintain that Im correct. Being is the verb, angry is the noun, and past should be the the adverb. Correct?

Get past, unless you are the object being passed around. Also, move past.

Passed is a verb. Something was passed (thrown, handed to another person, waved before your eyes). Something passed (drove by, died, didnt fail).

Or an adjective (a past life, past months)

OR a preposition (the house past the corner)

Ok, so Im not sure which are adverbs vs prepositions, but theyre all PAST. 🙂

Im all for dropping either pastor passed, and using one word only.

I recently got into a discussion with a friend about whether the correct saying is to move past an issue or to move passed. I think it would be past because its being used as a noun but Im not sure. Would really appreciate your help 🙂 Thanks!

Once I get passed the typos this is a good presentation.

Should this be past or passed or either?

I think either but thought Id ask.

If I said: Its always fun catching up on all those years passed! Is passed spelled correctly?

Itd be past the door and run it past him

Past = noun, adjective, preposition,

I will pass(verb) it by him. You are passing it to the guy, a thought, idea, concept.

It was passed(verb) by him. The idea, thought, concept was passed by him.

I will run(verb) it(object) past(preposition) him (It is being related to him, spatially, temporally, figuratively)

Do not go passed/past this point = Do not pass(verb, an action) this point. VS Do not go(verb) past(preposition relating to point) this point.

I will run it passed him, is my take on this one.

The it is trying to confuse thing, but I dont think it changes things.

Is it do not go passed this door or Do not go past this door.

Now that I think of it, maybe it is correct to be passed, because you would be passing the door frame to get into the room.

So to say Do not go (passed, past) this point. Would seem similar the the above statement.

There is a sentence here at work that is driving me nuts, my gut tells me it should be Past but I could be wrong. Please help. Which is correct.

Policy effective date is passed 30 days.
